Welcome!
I am an Associate Professor of Spanish at the University of Alabama. I teach a variety of grammar, composition, Hispanic literature and culture courses in the Modern Languages and Classics Department. I specialize in Early Modern Spanish literature, with a focus on Gender and Women's studies as well as Gender Theory. My main interests center on masculine and feminine subjectivities and the sociopolitical motivations and implications of their representations during the Golden Age. I look at issues of power in relation to the dynamics between men and women, specifically as it applies to verbal (linguistic, legal, religious, political, literary) and non-verbal (physical, cultural) dimensions of normative or disruptive conceptions of gender identity.
I teach a variety of undergraduate and graduate courses. I am also a Faculty Fellow in Service Learning: all of my classes for Heritage and non-native speakers of Spanish include a heavy service-learning component centered on English to Spanish translations. They are provided, for free, to a variety of community partners, such as Alabama Coalition Against Domestic Violence, Alabama Museum of Natural History, Good Samaritan Clinic, Schoolyard Roots, Turning Point and Tuscaloosa SAFE center.
For a number of years now I have also been the Spanish Undergraduate Director – that means I help students figure out their course requirements, future schedules, study abroad initiatives, and especially drafting plan for coming semesters so they can sail smoothly towards completing their degree. I have been involved in updating the curriculum for the Spanish Major and Minor, as well as a regular contributor to the yearly Majors Fair.
My achievements in research, teaching, and service were recently recognized by my institution through a Leadership Board Fellowship award, a generous $15,000 grant dedicated to the improvement, growth, and elaboration of research, teaching, and service endeavors.
Prior to joining the University of Alabama, I was a graduate student in the University of Illinois at Chicago, where I completed my MA and later my PhD in May 2015 under the direction of Dr. Rosilie Hernández-Pecoraro from the Department of Hispanic and Italian Studies and Dr. Anne J. Cruz from the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures at the University of Miami.
Previously I studied in the Facultad de Ciencias Sociales y Humanas at the University of Deusto in Spain where I completed a Licenciatura in English Philology; including 1 year of study-abroad in the School of English at the University of Leeds in the United Kingdom.
If you'd like to learn a bit more about me and what I do, head on to the different tabs on this page.
